What does being healthy mean to you? Honestly. If you were to take a minute to really think about it, what would you come up with? “I’m alive and not dead,” or “I don’t have cancer.” How about, “I can run a half marathon,” or “the diabetes hasn’t limited me too much”?
So. . .what does being healthy mean to you? To me, being healthy is more than a simple matter of life & death. It turns out that we all die regardless of how healthy we were in life. Being healthy has more to do with the quantity & (more importantly) the QUALITY of years in my life.
Ask the lady who deals with regular chemotherapy if being healthy is life or death, quantity of years or quality of life. Ask the gentleman that can’t play with the kids because of his heart condition, or the person that can’t walk through the store without wheezing. What might they say?
Maybe you’re nodding up & down or saying “yep” inside your head. Perhaps these ideas have been part of your thinking for a while now. Great—now what?
The “now what” part has to do with control—MY control, YOUR control. Many of us have been led to believe that we’re products of our DNA, our genetic make-up, our family history and predisposition–that you’ll get breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease because you’re “supposed to”. I’m here to tell you that is a load of crap! While those are factors, the things YOU do to yourself & for yourself are of much greater importance! If you treat your body properly, it will treat you well. Treat your body poorly and it will do the same to you. It’s that simple! Everything you do will either move your health in a positive direction or in a negative direction. Every. Single. Thing.
My sitting here and knocking out this article on a laptop computer is probably not moving my health in a positive direction. You reading it is probably not moving your health in a positive direction either. But what we do with this information might. And that’s why I’m writing it!
I have an immediate family history of cancer, diabetes and heart disease—very immediate! These predispositions are in my DNA, in my genetic make-up, but I’m not concerned about it. Why not? Well, because I’m eating well and I’m exercising. Because I’m in the process of maintaining great relationships and managing my stress as best as I can. Because I’m keeping my nervous system functioning optimally through chiropractic care which in turn keeps my immune system tip-top. I have a tremendous amount of control and responsibility over these areas of my life and my physical body. I understand that my health is not a point or a destination. My health will continue to be an ongoing process until I die. I’m not perfect in any of these aspects of my life—I won’t claim to be. But I will claim ownership over all of these aspects of my life. I won’t ever blame my genetics, my doctors or anyone else for the direction of my own health.

They are imbalanced conditions and because they are processes, they are either moving in a positive direction or they are moving in a negative direction. The difference is what you’re doing about it. How is your diet influencing your current diabetes, cancer, heart disease or allergies? What effect does exercise have on your bone density and stress levels? So, what does being healthy mean to you? To me, being healthy means having the control and having the responsibility to add quality to the years of my life. For myself, yes, but also for the important people around me. I’m eating properly and maintaining a level of fitness. I’m doing things to reduce stress in my life. I’m being happy where I am.

Are you interested in eating for your health? When it comes to being healthy, eating well is a huge factor in ensuring that your body functions properly. When your body functions properly, it not only finds its optimal size and shape, it also fights off sickness and disease with unbelievable efficiency! Now is the time to be eating for your health. A major and often overlooked factor in cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune dysfunction, allergies, etc. is the food that we put into our bodies. What we eat is either the best and most powerful form of nourishment and medicine or a slow and effective form of poisoning ourselves. When we poison ourselves with bad foods and food-like products, conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes are able to take hold much more easily.
Today, I want to show you the kinds of changes that I made a year ago in the way that I treat my body. 80-90% of what I eat falls into what I call green, whole and raw. Green, because most of my meals include different kinds of kale, spinach and lettuce. Whole, because these foods provide me with all of the nutrients and enzymes that my body needs to function correctly and efficiently. Raw, because it’s uncooked and unprocessed, allowing the most in enzyme function, without breaking down nutrients and rendering them less effective. I eat these potent and delicious salads two to three times a day.
I prepare my meals 1-3 days in advance. In a 7-cup glass bowl, I toss in a large handful of mixed greens, an equally large handful of shredded red cabbage and a medium carrot (prepped to your liking). I then add a bunch of pumpkin and sunflower seeds and I sprinkle a few raisins throughout. That is my salad. Prepped and ready for action whenever I get hungry! Some like to store a big batch in a huge bowl or in a big resealable bag. Be sure to refrigerate. These ingredients will keep for about a week, maybe longer.
When I’m ready to eat, I drizzle a bit of dressing over it. I toss the lid on and shake it til my hair’s messed up, then add a diced avocado and enjoy my super-healthy meal. I love these as is, but I can always add tomato or cucumber or mango or nuts or a variety of other healthy ingredients. Occasionally, I’ll add fish or chicken. The possibilities in eating for your health are endless!
As healthy as this meal is, it’s easy to minimize its benefits by drowning it in cheap, store-bought salad dressing. Many of these dressings include sunflower, canola or soy oils (fillers and inadequate sources of oils and fats, with plenty of useless calories) or scary-dairy, among other frightening ingredients. It’s difficult to find a decent and healthy dressing at a reasonable price even in a health-conscience community such as ours here in Boulder. With that in mind, I started making my own dressings with minimal prep and maximum health and flavor! In a 12 or 16-oz bottle, I use 4 parts olive oil and 1 part red wine vinegar. I’ll add 1/2 red onion, jalapeño, 4 cloves garlic, tsp crushed red pepper and salt/pepper to taste. Chop the onion, jalapeño and garlic or toss all of the ingredients in a food processor and blend. Add or subtract ingredients and quantities. Play with different ingredients to match your taste–mustard seed, herbs, spices!
Within three weeks of this major lifestyle change, I lost four inches around my waist. My energy was boosted, I was sleeping less and waking up more energized. Another thing–my concern for the cancer, heart disease and diabetes in my own physical body became of almost no concern! Even with those conditions and diseases in my immediate family history, in my genetics, I’m not as concerned. Why? Because my body and my immune system are up to the challenge! With chiropractic (proper nervous system function), proper eating (good nutrition) and proper exercise, among other factors, my body is handling those challenges–with flying colors and without doctors visits, without drugs of any sort and without removal of any of my body parts!
But 80% to 90% of my meals! “Doesn’t that sound a bit extreme?” you ask. That’s my form of moderation. If you’re asking me about “extreme”, this is my reply. Cancer, chemotherapy, radiation–that sounds extreme. Heart disease, heart attacks, stents, quadruple bypass surgery, heart transplants–that sounds extreme. Diabetes, insulin therapy, daily injections–that sounds extreme. Autoimmune diseases, frequent doctors’ visits, pills and pills and pills, removal of your breasts or prostate gland, other surgeries–that sounds extreme. Eating poorly is a huge factor in being sick.
“I can’t,” you say. I know–I used to say the same thing. I can’t not eat wheat or corn (bread, pasta, tortillas), I can’t give up meat at every meal, I can’t quit sugar. I cannot tell what you personally can or cannot do–what I can tell you is that I said the same thing.
I’m nowhere close to being vegan, I’m not a vegetarian either. There are plenty of vegan/vegetarian foods that are unhealthy. I enjoy a couple of beers on the weekends, maybe even a whiskey. I have a horrible sweet tooth and I still maintain a personal battle with sour gummies. I consider chicken burritos best friends–until I get to the table. I’m human–I enjoy things. I also recognize that many of the things that I enjoy can have a negative effect on me and my health if overused or abused. I realize that many foods labeled as “healthy” or even “safe” are not healthy or safe–certainly not in the quantities I used to enjoy. I enjoy my good health more than I enjoy those things. As it turns out, I also enjoy eating this newer, healthier way. My body craves the nutrition and I feel funky when I consume other things. When you talk about “moderation”, what is your definition? I have mine.
It is about cause and effect. It is not about genetics, family history, chance or luck. Treat your body well, it will respond well. Treat your body poorly, it will too. I’ve seen more sprained ankles in the past few weeks than I have in the past several months here at Mountainview Chiropractic Center. If you’re dealing with a recent ankle sprain or if you’re upset about residual symptoms from an older injury, you’re not alone.
Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries. However, they are not always minor injuries. Some people with repeated or severe sprains can develop long-term joint pain and weakness. Taking proper care of a sprained ankle can help prevent repetitive, long-term and chronic ankle issues. If you’ve suffered an ankle sprain, call our office right away to get it checked out! I have the tools and knowledge to help differentiate between a sprain, a fracture and a break. X-rays are available if necessary. Until you get to the office, these are some great tips for managing the pain and inflammation, and for jump-starting the proper healing process! Remember RICE.
RICE is an acronym used for the steps to take in case of a recent ankle sprain:
- Rest. Rest is pretty self-explanatory–stay off your feet and avoid activity if you can. Bracing and/or crutches may also be necessary.
- Ice. Be sure to apply ice for 20 minutes. Remove/re-freeze your ice pack for 40 minutes. Repeat as many times as you can during waking hours for the first two to three days.
- Compress. Press the ice to the injured area by wrapping the ice pack around your ankle with an ace bandage. Also, keep the injured area compressed or wrapped when you’re not applying ice.
- Elevate your ankle (with or without the ice) whenever possible in order to drain excess fluids from your injury.
Inflammation is amazing–we don’t want to avoid it! Following the RICE protocol will help in maximizing the helpful aspects of inflammation while minimizing it’s negative aspects. Again, following an injury, it’s best to call us to set up your chiropractic appointment.
Chiropractic adjustments will improve function and greatly benefit a sprained ankle both in the quality of healing as well as the speed of healing. Without the ankle joints functioning properly, there will be improper healing and the risk of repetitive or chronic issues in the future is almost certain. Improper ankle bio-mechanics will also lead to knee, hip and spinal issues.

I’ve been getting plenty of questions regarding fever in the past few weeks. Is fever good? Can fever be dangerous? What temperature is too high?
Fever is also a sign that a fierce, healthy battle is brewing in the body–YOU vs GERMS (bacteria, viruses, etc). It means that there is an imbalance (too many germs). When you’re being attacked by these tiny invaders, your healthy body knows how to deal with them with different strategies. One of these strategies involves raising the temperature of your body, making it too warm for these foreign germs to survive. This is fever, and like I’ve already said, it is wonderful. Lowering this defense mechanism with Tylenol or other medications provides an environment that is better-suited for the germs.
It’s been shown that until the fever has exceeded 107 degrees for an extended period of time, it won’t cause brain damage. But don’t take it from me–this from Dr Alan Green, MD, FAAP. So a temp of 103, 104 or even 105 is not life-threatening. It’s actually very beneficial.
It is important to keep hydrated. Watch for exceedingly yellow urine, which indicates a lack of hydration. Giving children room-temperature fluids in this situation should be considered re-hydration, not cooling down.
Now, I see kids in my office on a regular basis. More and more parents are bringing in their children because they’ve heard that chiropractic might be able to help with different illnesses including ear infections. When the bones of the neck shift and are not able to move properly, it causes interference along the nerves of the neck which in turn messes with the immune system. When this happens, the immune system cannot produce the required defense mechanisms to fight off an infection/illness properly. The child will repeatedly get sick, several times a year or more in some cases. This may also affect the child developmentally. If the immune system is compromised, Tylenol, antibiotics and other medications will treat the symptoms (fever, infection, etc) but will not do anything for the compromise in your child’s immune system, resulting in repeated or chronic illness. As a chiropractor, I’m specially trained to find these interferences and make shifts so that the body can do what it’s supposed to and be able to take care of itself. Next time your child develops a fever, ask yourself, “Why is fever present?” and “Do I know better than the body?” I, for one, know I’m not smarter than my body. Fever is our friend–leave it alone!

It’s snowing here in Boulder! As beautiful as it is, many of us may need snow removal services, which isn’t as beautiful. If you’re someone who needs to have snow shoveled, get someone else to do it! If you’re the one shoveling, here are some recommendations they may be helpful.
Warm up with 5-10 minutes of movement before jumping in to shovel.
- Keep hydrated before and after.
- Get into a scissors stance with one leg positioned in front of the other making sure to alternate.
- Lift with your legs.
- Avoid twisting your back while lifting and unloading.
- Avoid twisting your wrists or arms.
- Take breaks for larger jobs.
- Take your time.
If you feel sore after shoveling, apply an ice bag to the affected area for 20 min, then take it off for 40 min. Repeat four to five times each day over the next day or two. Injuries from shoveling snow may include strains, sprains, muscle spasms, disc injury and other health problems. How do high heels affect your health? You have your opinion on how they look and how they make you feel, but have you wondered how high heels are affecting your body? Do you wonder why you don’t see many 60 and 70-year-olds wearing their favorite stilettos?
Here are a few things to keep in mind about wearing high heels:
1. Your ankles and feet are carefully designed. Without counting the tibia and fibula (lower-leg bones), there are 26 bones between your ankle and foot which form intricate joints meant to move your feet and support your body weight.
2. Those abilities to move your feet and carry your weight are greatly compromised when the back part of your foot is elevated any amount in comparison to the front of your foot.
3. Your toes and metatarsals (foot bones), along with their joints, are not meant to carry the full weight of the body.
4. Skin problems, bunions, toe/foot issues, ankle/knee issues, risk of stress fracture or other injury, along with compromises in your spinal health all stem from the use of high heels.
The longer someone wears high heels, the more serious these issues become. Over time, some of those changes are reversible, others may not be.
I see women who have to come in to my office on a regular basis, but who refuse to stop wearing heels. Injury and Inflammation
Injuries such as a sprain (twisted ankle), a bruise (charlie horse) or a repetitive strain (carpal tunnel), will trigger inflammation. Inflammation is an awesome, normal defense mechanism which your tissues need to heal! It isolates the injured part of your body and starts the healing process.
Without taking care of an injured area, however, inflammation can slow down that same repair process. It can hinder the flow of nutritious, beneficial and healing chemicals to the injured area. This, in turn, may leave scar tissue, muscular issues and constant pain as your body recovers. So, even though your body heals, it does so improperly and leads to dysfunction down the road.
Ice and Inflammation
Call us immediately to set up an appointment following injury. Until then, taking care of yourself should involve applying ice to your injured body part. This helps push the old used inflammation out of the injured area and makes room for new fresh inflammation to come into the area. This can be done repeatedly during the first three to four days of an injury. Things to keep in mind while applying ice are included in the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (if it’s a limb injury such as a wrist or a knee).

If you don’t suffer from menstrual cramps, you almost certainly know someone who does. In many cases, this condition is enough to keep you from functioning properly during your daily routine.
So what can chiropractic offer someone in this situation? Before we answer this question, let’s back up a bit.
The ‘Nerve’ Connection
The nerves in the low back supply our lower digestive tract, bowels, bladder, the length of our legs and our reproductive organs.
